Background: The OAS Secretary General of
will be present at a photographic history exhibition about the early years of
the Mexican petroleum industry, from January 14-28 at the exhibition space of
the main building of the Organization of American States in Washington.
"The Birth of Mexico's Oil Industry" was curated by Marco Bracamontes, president
of the Houston-Tampico Sister City Association, from U.S. and British archives
and collections. After showing it in Mexico City in August 2007 in conjunction
with the Texas Governor’s Office, the Sister City Association is now bringing it
to the nation’s capital for the first time.
The photographic history exhibit previously was shown in Houston in 2004, Dallas
in 2005, Tampico, Mexico, in 2006 and Austin in May 2007.
Sponsoring the exhibit in Washington is the Permanent Mexican Representative to
OAS, Amb. Gustavo Albin,
Halliburton,
Exxon Mobil and
Continental Airlines.
The Houston-Tampico Sister City Association highlights the ties between the oil
and shipping industries on the Gulf of Mexico coast, engaging in a variety of
public education and goodwill activities. The Organization of American States (OAS)
brings together the nations of the Western Hemisphere to strengthen cooperation
on democratic values, defend common interests and debate the major issues facing
the region and the world. The OAS is the
region’s principal multilateral forum for strengthening democracy, promoting
human rights, and confronting shared problems such as poverty, terrorism,
illegal drugs and corruption (www.oas.org).
