“The Birth of Mexico’s Oil Industry” Exhibit Stops for One-Day Showing at iWOW in The Woodlands

Exhibit Showcases 100 Year-Old Links Between Texas and Mexico; Treats History Buffs and Energy Community to New Selection of Archival Photos

HOUSTON, NOVEMBER 8, 2010 — Houston-Tampico Sister Cities Association announced today that the “The Birth of Mexico’s Oil Industry,” a historic photo exhibit with images from 1900 to 1938, is making a one-day stop at iWOW in The Woodlands on Saturday, November 20, 2010, near the main stage by the waterway.

The images, which illustrate the dawn of the Mexican oil industry, come from American, Mexican and British collections from the first half of the 20th century. The free show is on view as part of the iWOW and is open to the public from 3 PM to 9 PM.

“This is an exhibit offering more than 50 black and white original and restored photos of a younger era,” said Marco Bracamontes, curator of the exhibit. “In 1921 Mexico was the second largest producer of crude oil worldwide behind the U.S. These images offer a glimpse of that glorious shared past,” he added.

The images showcase an often-overlooked part of history for both countries.

“This is a great addition to iWOW and The Woodlands Convention & Visitors Bureau is honored to host this exhibit,” said Nick Wolda, President, TWCVB. “The Woodlands is home to some of the world’s leading energy and petrochemical companies, and we hope current and former energy professionals as well as history buffs stop by Saturday to get a historic glimpse of the industry in its infancy.”

The exhibit, to be held on November 20, takes on a special significance this year, as Mexico celebrates the centennial of the Mexican Revolution. The Mexican War of Revolution to overthrow the government of Porfirio Diaz started on November 20 1910, and lasted until 1917 when a new Constitution was passed.

“The Birth of Mexico’s Oil Industry” exhibit was last shown in London during April and May of 2010. The show in The Woodlands is presented in part by BBVA Compass Bank.

Sister Cities International is a non-profit organization established by President Ike Eisenhower in order to improve communication, cultural and business relations between the people of the United States and the rest of the world.
